Today is the first day of the 113th Congress. The 112th Congress was the least effective, biggest disaster of a Congress possibly in US history. Part of the reason for this is that Republican senators have consistently refused to allow important issues to come to a vote on the Senate floor.
In order to block votes on legislation, senators used to have to filibuster; they would talk all night, for hours and hours, until the Senate Majority Leader let the bill die. Now, senators don’t even have to work that hard to be obstructionists: they simply say that they’re going to filibuster, and it dies.
Harry Reid and the Senate Democrats have a chance to reinstate the talking filibuster. Unfortunately, they don’t seem like they’re going to. Please pick up the phone and call 1-866-937-5062 to tell your senator that you support the talking filibuster, and then reblog. THIS STUFF MATTERS!
