The Catholic Church REALLY doesn't want to provide adequate health insurance to its employees

Weeks after the Obama administration publicly denied religious exemptions to the August 2011 HHS birth control coverage mandate, the Catholic Church continues to pitch a holy fit. With all the totally not corrupt or politically overbearing subtlety of the LDS church during Prop 8, the Church promises to keep attacking the decision in any and all ways possible. (Presumably with all the money that they make and pay no taxes on each year.)

I think I speak for everyone when I wish the Catholic Church all the best in this valiant fight to send health care back to the Middle Ages, and I only hope that this courageous and noble battle doesn’t take too much time away from encouraging citizens of AIDS stricken countries to stop using condoms

I’ve been reading the Millenium series (I’m on the last one) and it has lead me to fantasize about strange things.

Right now, I want to create my own branch of the CIA that specializes in tracking down and fining the criminally ignorant. Or some branch of NASA that can figure out a way to reach through computer screens and slap people in the face.

This mess was submitted to me by weighhappy, who informs me that the original question was, “Is it socially acceptable for a girl to strip down to her bra in the middle of a store to try something on?” To which I would answer no, because our society is really hung up on hating women’s bodies, and perverting the natural human body into a sex object regardless of context. Should it be socially unacceptable? Also, no. Listen, we’ve all waited an hour to get into a damn dressing room, sometimes I just want to see if that shirt fits me and get the hell out of there! As long as you’re not breaking any public decency laws (which are generally stupid), who cares?

But no. Instead of saying any of those things, people speculated for TWENTY-THREE comments on how only sexy women, or maybe trashy women, or even blind women should strip down, and how we all love boobies, and also how the bra woman in question is not a woman at all, but in fact a 13 year-old child who is also somehow a “slut”, before our submitter, the voice of reason, shut it down.

There are no words.

Dylan Ratigan: Racism was rebranded ‘the war on drugs’
MSNBC host Dylan Ratigan on Monday highlighted the concerning racial disparities that existed within America’s war against illegal drugs.
“Our big story on this Martin Luther King holiday is the new math of racism in America,” he said. “The greedy bastards have rebranded racism, calling it ‘the war on drugs.’ They’ve made it both acceptable and profitable. While the concerns of racism from the 1950s and 60s have improved in this country, if you look at the numbers the war on drugs has become a racist war.”
He noted that African Americans are ten times more likely than white Americans to be imprisoned for the same drug charges. He also noted there were more African Americans in prison or on probation today than there were slaves in America before the civil war.
Dylan added that American taxpayers spent $74 billion on prisons in 2007, with a growing percentage of that money going to private prisons.
“And yes, publicly traded for profit prison companies exist,” he said. “These companies have massive political and lobbying wings to keep the war on drugs alive, as they also happen to use the very prisoners as cheap labor.”

As a white blogger, I am happy to inform everyone that racism totally doesn’t exist anymore.
Oh wait.

Um, no…you don’t see it as being bipolar because you don’t have an actual mental illness. But way to coopt a serious illness in order to make a sexist joke, that is TOTES HILAR!!!1!!

James, if you’re going to act like a misogynist, expect to be treated like one. Also, stop being such a fucking misogynist. (The submitter informs me that James here is only 15. Start the sexism young, amirite!)

Are we really not going to point out how wrong it is for someone to refer to all of their significant other’s friends as “sluts”? I don’t think I could date someone who was so horribly judgmental and slut-shaming towards my friends.

Honestly, the thing that kills me about the anti-choice movement…

…is this notion that pro-choicers want abortion to continue to be a reality for so many women. That isn’t true. I want to live in a world where no woman faces unplanned pregnancy, because birth control is affordable, sex education is adequate, and reproductive coercion is an issue taken seriously and punished. I want to live in a world where rape is such an abominable crime that we actually take measures to eliminate it once and for all, so no woman is ever impregnated by a monster who has violated her. I want to live in a world where abortion is destigmatized so that women who will die if they carry to term, or have pregnancies that will result in stillbirths can have a necessary medical procedure without being harassed on the street by these so-called “pro-life heroes”. I want to live in a world where 1 in 3 women doesn’t have an abortion in her lifetime because less than 1 in 3 women need abortions in their lifetimes.

But the answer to this problem isn’t to ban abortion…that will solve nothing…in fact it will cost actual lives that everyone can agree are lives. I mean, really? If there are fires everywhere, and there are no fire extinguishers and everything is made out of dried pine needles, is the answer to ban fire? Or is the answer to provide fire extinguishers, fire safety classes, and buildings not made of dried pine needles?

The answer is to create an environment in which we actually give a shit about taking care of women, and making sure that everyone has access to family planning and health care. We have to create an environment that supports women who give birth by not immediately ignoring their children when they’re living and breathing, but by making sure there are good public schools, and living wages for their parents.

So it really gets under my skin when these self-righteous “Students for Life” start pontificating about how they’re going to “end abortion in our lifetime”. Yeah, well, your way doesn’t work and it kills people. So stop demonizing those of us working towards the actual solutions.
